Hello Friends!

We hope this finds you well and not too snowbound! Greetings from sunny Georgia and from Pudge’s barn in Manheim! Boy Pudge and I are delighted to share this past weekend’s Road to the Roses results. It was a very thrilling weekend for Upstart and his New York based connections at GulfStream Park! Upstart took command of the win in the Holy Bull Stakes (G2) by a 5 1/2 length margin. Frosted came in at number two, but he ran a good race all things considered. It was a tougher race for Frosted being in the one hole and taking some dirt in the snooter.

Upstart is owned by Ralph M. Evans and trained by the famed Rick Violette. His jockey, Jose Ortiz had kept Upstart focused forward for much of the race and in good position too. Coming around the far turn and into the stretch we saw Upstart pick up some momentum and then pulled away from the back leaving the stretch. Frosted was second and Bluegrass Singer was third after he was running in first for much of the race. Upstart made this transition look so smooth – a powerful stride. Gosh he looked like he was gliding past the Grandstand!

This race was a 1 1/16 mile distance and we feel pretty confident that Upstart can make the grueling mile and a quarter in the Derby! He’s now number three on the Leaderboard too. At this point we are not sure if he’ll run next in the Gotham or stay at Gulfstream for the next prep race there. He’s got options and some time to play with but rest assured we are looking forward to his next appearance. He’s got a good track record now and he’ll be one to beat! Stay tuned!

Next Road to the Roses Race:
Kentucky Oaks Preps:

Forward Gal Stakes (G2), January 24th, Gulfstream Park

Birdatthewire another fabulous trainee from Dale Romans hit the board in the top spot and points toward the Kentucky Oaks. Dale is famous for doing well with top notch horses and one Pudge and I luv dearly — Shackleford so we’re not too surprised that we see Dale find his way to the winner’s circle once again. This barn beauty held back for a bit while the early leaders fought it out and then in the stretch she shot right on by and took a masterful 3 + length victory!! Not too shabby for a recent maiden winner! She’s got talent folks!

Birdatthewire is owned by Forum Racing, LLC. Lastofthemohicans was second and Taylor S was third. Thrilling charge from behind by Birdatthewire!

Next up: Feb 7th, Withers at the big A and Robert B Lewis Stakes from Santa Anita Park!

For the Fillies:

Jan. 31st – Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park and Las Virgenes in Santa Anita Park!

Stay tuned friends for we so enjoy reporting on our equine friends – we fondly think of them as Thoroughbred Powerhouses! They are beautiful, strong and competitive! That’s what we luv about racing.

More to come on this ride to the famed gates at Churchill Downs on the First Saturday in May!!

luv from your friends in racing,
Indy and Pudge ♥
